One of the greatest things about joining National Novel Writing Month is the community. Once you create a free membership at NaNoWriMo.org you have access to the member forums which is absolutely teaming with activity this time of year.

There are local area forums in which you can meet and interact with other people in your area. This is a great resource for local write-ins and gatherings which often continue on during the other non-nanowrimo months of the year.

There are genre forums where you can meet and hang out with other people writing in the genre you are: horror, romance, chicklit, mystery, sci/fantasy, erotica and so on.

There are areas in which you can ask for and find answers to questions you have about plotting, strategies to meet your writing goals, and even areas where you can gather with others who are more intent on procrastinating and time-wasting than on writing.

There are even areas which offer word wars, challenges and even dares such as “put a cross dressing pirate in your novel” and “have a dragon fly by in the first 50 pages of your non-fantasy novel”.

The members of the community are the greatest cheerleaders, encouraging you on when you’re feeling you can’t do it and congradulating you when you meet your goals. Check out the community forums. You’ll be glad you did. After all, it’s a well known fact that misery loves company
