8 Things You Might Not Know About Me

I’ve been tagged by Loud Mouth Man to write 8 things. I’m not really sure where to begin but let’s see what I can come up with.

  1. In 1996 I won Family PC Magazine’s best kids’ website contest for my site Maddy Mayhem’s Kids’ Stuff which was later mentioned in several other magazines & newspapers worldwide and in The Internet for Kids for Dummies book and The Canadian Internet Handbook. I stopped publishing the site in 2000.
  2. When I was 12 I performed in several radio plays for a local radio station voicing the parts of the typical “dewy eyed 20 year old” type characters. The majority of the other voice actors were middle-aged.
  3. I took banjo lessons from ages 10-12. I still own the banjo but it hasn’t been out of it’s case in 20 years.
  4. I read an average of 10 books per week. Usually equally divided between fiction and non-fiction. I frequently have both “books out” and “books on hold” maxed at my local library. It’s not unusual for me to walk out of a library with 3 or 4 bags filled with books subjects ranging from cookbooks, mysql, knitting, self-help, media to chick-lit, mystery, and sci-fantasy.
  5. I’m reclusive by nature. I’ll often go as many as 5 or more weeks without leaving my house for any reason. Especially in the winters. As of this writing I haven’t left my house in 5 days and it had been over 2 weeks before that. This usually makes most people a little nuts but I find it peaceful.
  6. I took fashion design in college. I’ve never done much with the diploma until a couple of years ago when I started designing knitting patterns for my own use. I’m terrible at keeping track of these patterns though. They’re often just scribbled math equations and sketches with little rhyme or reason. Usually within 2 or 3 days of scribbling something down for a pattern even I don’t recall what it was for, having moved beyond that part in my work.
  7. I have too many interests, ideas, and passions. Most people have told me that I should settle down and do one thing. I’ve decided that the term Renaissance Soul was made just for me. I can’t imagine having just one calling in life. I’ve stopped trying to put the square peg in the round hole.
  8. Whenever asked “what can you do” or “what’s special about you” my standard reply is: I can build and install a linux computer from scratch; plan, cook and serve a dinner party for 50; read and write a review for a book - all in the same 24 hour period - In heels.

Now I’m going to tag 8 others to write their “8 things”. I hope they’ll play along:

  1. Hey merlene!

Posted here for your enjoyment ;)

  2. Being that I don’t have my own blog…yet, I shall post my 8 things here.

    1. I wrote a manuscript from the time I was 13 till I was 17. When it was done, it was over 300 pages. I never did anything with it, except for print it out. It’s still sitting in my closet.

    2. In junior high, my nickname was Whiskas, due to an unfortunate incident involving braces, food getting stuck, and the breath that resulted.

    3. When I was 6 weeks old, I had surgery on my head to stop my skull from fusing together. It normally takes 18 years for that to happen, I wanted to do it in 6 weeks. At the time, in 1980, I was the youngest person to ever had this surgery performed on them.

    4. I completed 42 Girl Scout badges one summer. My friend Debbie and I were on a mission to complete the entire Junior Girl Scout Badge Book, we came close. (Troop #535 in the Tres Condados Girl Scout Council represent!)

    5. I haven’t always been a huge car nerd. While it is true that being a gearhead runs very strongly through my bloodline, I have really only truly embraced my car nerddom in about the last 10 years.

    6. Before my parents would let me get tattooed, I rebelled by getting my ears pierced. At one point, I had 10 in my right ear and 5 in my left.

    7. I went to the 1990 MTV Music Video Awards. Our seats were 20 rows off the floor, to the left side of the stage. I met Downtown Julie Brown, Heavy D, and the original members of the Black Eyed Peas. Somewhere I have an autographed program from that night.

    8. I was almost a triplet. My mom was on fertility drugs to try to get pregnant, and there was a 99% chance the egg would split 3 ways.

And for good measure, a 9th…

    9. In 1988, when Pontiac debuted the Transport, they included a little promo VHS tape with the sale of each vehicle. A few scenes were shot at my house, and I played the kid who got out of the car and walked into the house with her “mom”.
